The BFG Choice Board for Advanced 5th Graders
A week-long choice board for 5th-grade advanced learners reading Roald Dahl's The BFG, where students earn 60 points by selecting activities that analyze Gobblefunk vocabulary, design character dream jars, and compare the BFG with other giants. It builds vocabulary and etymology skills, close reading, character analysis, and written reflection through a Reflection Log, and works well as an independent or small-group contract spread across the reading unit.
“Create a choice board for ELA AIG students who are reading BFG.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the choice board at the start of the novel so students can plan point totals across the week and track their evidence in the Reflection Log.
- Discussion question: How does Dahl's invented language change the way you picture the BFG, and what does it reveal about his character?
- Scaffold for students who need support: provide a word bank of Gobblefunk terms with sample context clues and a graphic organizer for the Venn diagram comparing giants.
- Extension for advanced students: have them research real etymologies of the sounds Dahl borrowed and write a short comparison of how Gobblefunk compares to other invented languages in literature.
- Plan roughly 45 minutes of class time per choice, with the full board taking about a week of independent and small-group work.
