Earth and Sky Vocabulary with Picture Cues for Grade 4
By Genevieve A.
A short vocabulary list for 4th graders studying stars and the sky, pairing each key word with a simple definition and a picture idea to imagine or draw. It builds science word knowledge and visualization skills, and works well as a quick reference throughout a unit on space.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the list at the start of a space or astronomy unit, reading a few words aloud and having students act out or sketch the picture idea for each before moving on.
- Discussion question: How does drawing a model of the sun or Earth help us understand something we cannot see up close?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pair each word with an actual drawing or photo, and have them point to the picture as they read the definition aloud.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to write a sentence using two or three of the words together, such as how an astronomer might build a model of a star.
- Estimated time: about 15 to 20 minutes for a first pass through the list, with brief review sessions of 5 minutes later in the unit.
