Vending Machine Nutrition Labels for 7th Grade
By Jacqueline D.
A practice set of 15 mock nutrition facts labels for common vending machine snacks and drinks, including cookies, chips, Gatorade, and soda. Students compare calories, sugar, and sodium across items, building skills in reading and interpreting data in a real-world context for 7th graders.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 45-minute station or small-group activity after a lesson on reading nutrition labels, with students working in pairs to fill in a comparison chart.
- Discussion question: Which item has the most sugar per serving, and how does that compare to the recommended daily limit printed on the label?
- Scaffold for struggling readers by providing a highlighted key defining terms like "Total Carb," "Sat. Fat," and "% Daily Value" before students begin.
- Extension for advanced students: have them calculate the calories per gram of sugar or rank the 15 items by a combined score for calories, sugar, and sodium, then justify their weighting.
- Estimated time: about 30 minutes for the comparison task plus 10 minutes for class discussion.
