Analyzing Athlete Heart Rate Data for Middle Schoolers
By Rodrick F.
A data-analysis activity for 7th graders that uses real heart rate statistics from basketball, golf, and calisthenics to explore mean, standard deviation, and what makes an activity intense. Students interpret a table of MNHR and SDHR values and connect the numbers to physical wellness and effort.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 45-minute block where students first read the introduction, then analyze the heart rate table in pairs before a whole-class discussion.
- Discussion question: Why might golf show a higher standard deviation than basketball even when its mean heart rate is lower for 8th graders?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the terms mean and standard deviation with a simple example, such as two groups of test scores with the same average but different spreads.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them calculate what the target zone percentages suggest about effort and design a short recommendation for a school sports program.
- Estimated time: about 40 to 50 minutes including discussion.
