The Quest for the Golden Acorn: A Third Grade Play Script
A two-part play script for 3rd graders in which a brave squirrel and a cautious mouse team up to climb a tall oak tree and find the Golden Acorn. It builds reading comprehension through character traits, dialogue, and stage directions, and works well for a 30 to 45 minute reading block or small-group read-aloud.
“Create a two part play script that promotes reading comprehension at the third grade level”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a read-aloud or readers' theater activity, assigning Pip and Squeak to student pairs so each child practices expression while following the story's sequence.
- Discussion questions: How are Pip and Squeak different, and how do their differences help them solve the problem? What clues in the stage directions tell you how a character is feeling?
- Scaffold for struggling readers by pre-teaching key vocabulary, providing a character chart to fill in as they read, and giving them the stage directions in bold to help them track who is speaking.
- Extension for advanced students: have them write a short Part Three in which Squeak and Pip face a new challenge, using at least two stage directions that show emotion.
- Estimated time: about 15 minutes to read the first scene aloud, with the full two-part script taking roughly 30 to 40 minutes including discussion.
