Long I Spelling Sort for Fourth Grade
A short spelling practice set in which 4th graders sort 18 words by long i pattern: magic e, igh, and y. It builds phonics and spelling-pattern recognition through a word sort, a tree map, and a few guided reflection steps, and works well as a focused 20-30 minute practice block.
“Can you make a spelling packet for fourth grade students practicing long i - using magic e, igh and y”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the three long i spellings with the Remember box first, then have students read the word bank aloud so the sound stays front and center before sorting begins.
- Discussion question: Why do you think the word 'why' ends in y but 'light' uses igh? Ask students to look for clues in the word endings and what comes before the vowel.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a pre-labeled tree map with one example word already placed in each category (e.g., time, light, fly), and let them sort the remaining words with a partner.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them generate three new long i words for each pattern and explain which spelling rule they followed.
- Estimated time: about 20-30 minutes for the sort, plus a few minutes for a whole-class check of answers.
