Finding the Main Idea: Historical Passages for Grade 5
A practice packet of short historical passages that helps 5th graders identify explicitly stated main ideas and then justify their choice with text evidence. Students read each paragraph, select the statement that captures the whole passage, and write a sentence of evidence explaining how they know, building reading comprehension and written reasoning skills.
“Create practice passages for students to identify explicit main ideas. Then provide a section for them to explain how they know it's the main idea.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 30-45 minute independent or partner practice block after a brief mini-lesson on the difference between a main idea and a supporting detail.
- Discussion question: What words in the paragraph tell you the author is mostly writing about one topic, and how is that different from a single fact in the paragraph?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them underline the first and last sentences of each paragraph and ask, "What do these sentences have in common?" before choosing an answer.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own short paragraph with an explicit main idea and three supporting details, then trade with a partner to test whether the main idea is clear.
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes per passage, or roughly 30-40 minutes for the full set.
