Station Rotation: Communication and Academic Vocabulary
A 50-minute station rotation for 5th graders built around the power of communication, pairing vocabulary work (express, communicate, emotion, requirement, perspective) with short writing and speaking tasks. It is designed for pre-emergent English learners, with visual word supports and sentence frames to help students build confidence in both reading and talking about ideas.
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 50-minute rotation, with about 10 minutes per station and time at the end for a brief whole-group share; students can work in small mixed-language groups to support one another.
- Discussion question: Can you think of a time when you wanted to express a feeling but had trouble finding the words? How did you communicate it instead?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the four word bank terms with the visual examples, and offer a sentence frame such as "I can express ___ by ___" for the writing prompt.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to write a short paragraph explaining how a word's perspective changes what a message means, using at least two word bank terms.
- Estimated time: roughly 50 minutes total, including vocabulary review, the writing task, and a closing share.
