Trade Barriers and Key Economic Terms
A short vocabulary-and-application practice set for 7th graders covering trade barriers, tariffs, quotas, boycotts, and embargoes. Students define each term and then apply them to real trade disputes in the follow-up activities, building reading comprehension, academic vocabulary, and analytical reasoning about global economics.
“. quota, boycott, embargo, tariffs, trade barriers”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 30 to 45 minute warm-up or vocabulary block before a unit on international trade or economic policy, with students reading the term table first and then working through the activities individually or in pairs.
- Discussion question: Why might a government choose a tariff over a quota, and who benefits or loses from each choice?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the words "tax" and "limit" and have students sort the five terms into "taxes" versus "restrictions" before reading the full definitions.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to find a recent real-world trade dispute, identify which of these terms apply, and explain whether the action is likely to raise or lower prices for consumers.
- Estimated time: about 30 to 45 minutes for the vocabulary table and activities, plus 10 minutes for a whole-class debrief.
