Kentucky Geography Bellringers for Grade 6
By Lori R.
A five-day set of geography bellringers for 6th graders that introduces latitude and longitude through Kentucky cities and map plotting. Students build coordinate-reading and map-interpretation skills, supported by a reference table and a Kentucky Geological Survey map tool.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 10-15 minute opening warm-up each day, before the main Kentucky geography lesson.
- Discussion question: Why does a smaller number with W mean a place is farther east, and how would you explain that to a classmate?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide the coordinate reference table and have students practice locating one city together before working independently.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to find coordinates for a city outside Kentucky and compare its position relative to Frankfort.
- Estimated time: About 10-15 minutes per day, totaling roughly one hour across the five days.
