Final Y Phonics Review for Struggling Readers
By Dianne S.
A printable 20-minute phonics review packet that practices final-y words with long i (fly, sky) and long e (happy, puppy) sounds through word lists, short phrases, two connected passages, and a quick sort. Designed for middle schoolers reading at an early elementary level, with short directions, simple vocabulary, and a focus on reading practice over writing.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 20-minute warm-up or intervention block, moving through the four sections in order: word lists (2 min), phrases and sentences (5 min), two passages (9 min), and the mixed check (4 min).
- Discussion question for Passage 1: "Which word in the story ends with the /ī/ sound, and how do you know?" For Passage 2: "What happens to the y sound in two-syllable words like happy?"
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have them tap syllables on the table for two-syllable words, and read each sentence with a partner before reading solo; remind them that y patterns are common but not always true, so they should check their reading.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to find another final-y word in the passage that doesn't follow the pattern, or to say the two sounds of a chosen word aloud.
- Plan roughly 20 minutes total, and keep the pace brisk so the packet stays age-respectful and doesn't drag.
