Vowel Team Sorting Stations for 2nd Grade
By Nora F.
A station-rotation packet for 2nd graders that builds decoding of multisyllabic words with the vowel teams oa, ou, and ow. Students read a word list with partners, sort words by vowel team on a Station Tracker, and use a tip box to apply the long /o/ and /ow/ sounds in longer words like sailboat, mountain, and snowball.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as one station in a rotation during a 45-minute literacy block, with small groups of 3-4 students cycling through in about 10-12 minutes per station.
- Discussion question: Why does the word 'snow' have a long /o/ sound but 'snowball' also has one, while 'cow' sounds different? What clues can we look for?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Model sorting the first two words together, then have them split the remaining words by underlining the vowel team before deciding which group it belongs to.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own multisyllabic words for each vowel team and explain how the syllable breaks affect the sound.
- Estimated time: About 10-12 minutes for reading, sorting, and discussion at this station.
