Qu Team Word Building Practice for Second Grade
By Zachary D.
A short worksheet packet that has 2nd graders build and read words with the 'qu' team, such as quilt and quick, while practicing the /kw/ sound. It includes word-building, read-and-mark, and word-sort activities, and it works well as a 20-30 minute phonics practice block or independent work.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a phonics review after a short mini-lesson introducing 'qu' as a team making /kw/, since the 'Remember' box gives students the key rule to refer back to.
- Discussion question: Why does 'q' always get a 'u' after it in English, and what do you notice about the sound the two letters make together?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them read each word aloud with you, chunk the word into 'qu' and the ending, and use letter tiles to build the words before writing them.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write a sentence using two or more of the 'qu' words, or to find other 'qu' words in a book they are reading.
- Estimated time: About 20-30 minutes for all three parts, depending on how much support students need with the word sort.
