Finding Main Ideas in Animal Paragraphs for 2nd Grade
By Brooke G.
A short practice set for 2nd graders that asks them to read animal paragraphs about polar bears and honeybees and choose the best main idea from four multiple-choice options. It builds reading comprehension and the skill of separating a paragraph's central point from its supporting details.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a guided practice station or independent work during a 20-30 minute reading block, after you have modeled how to identify a main idea with a think-aloud.
- Discussion question: How do the details about the polar bear's fur and paws help us decide which answer is the main idea?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Read each paragraph aloud together, then ask the student to name who or what the paragraph is mostly about and underline the sentence that tells the most important information.
- Extension for advanced readers: Have them write one sentence of their own main idea for a new animal paragraph, then list two supporting details that back it up.
- Estimated time: About 20-30 minutes for the full set, depending on how much support each student needs.
