Physical Features of North America Station Rotation
A multi-day station rotation packet for 6th grade social studies that guides English learners at WIDA levels 2 and 3 through the mountain ranges, plains, and bodies of water of North America. It pairs group reading and sentence-frame discussion with independent tasks, Spanish glosses for key terms, and plenty of visuals.
“I'd like a multi-day resource for my English learners WIDA level 2 and 3 students for 6th grade social studies. The learning target is: Identify the physical features of North America, including mountain ranges, plains and bodies of water. I'd like some pages to discuss and read as a group, then independent assignments for them to complete. I'd love some station assignments for them to work on. Also, please use Spanish translations for more difficult and/or important words, as well as plenty of visuals.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this across several days, starting with a whole-group read-aloud of the key terms and passage so students hear the vocabulary, then moving into stations where small groups rotate through mapping, labeling, and sentence-building tasks.
- Discussion question: How are the Rocky Mountains different from the Appalachian Mountains, and how can you tell from their shape?
- Scaffold for students still building English: provide the sentence frames in the 'Talk About It' section, pre-label the map with Spanish and English terms, and let students point or draw before writing.
- Extension for advanced students: have them compare how plains and mountains affected where people settled, using evidence from the passage and a map.
- Plan roughly 45 minutes per session across 3 to 4 days, with independent work used as a closing check for understanding.
