Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 20-30 minute independent or partner reading block during a unit on early civilizations or world geography, pairing it with a physical map of Africa and the Middle East.
- Discussion question: Why did people build their homes near the Nile, and how might the river's flooding have shaped farming?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the terms delta, desert, and fertile, and have students label the bolded places on a blank map as they read.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to compare how the Nile's geography supported Egypt's development with how another river valley supported an ancient civilization.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes for reading and discussion, plus 10 minutes for map labeling if used.
