Cinderella Around the World: ENL Culture Comparison
A visual, sentence-frame-supported reading activity for 2nd-grade English learners that introduces several Cinderella stories from different cultures. Students build vocabulary with a word bank (culture, setting, tradition) and practice comparing stories through guided sentence frames, making it well suited to a 30-45 minute small-group or one-on-one ENL session.
“An ENL-supported activity with visual supports and sentence frames introducing the different Cinderella stories from around the world and introducing their cultures to an English language learner in the second grade.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the three word-bank terms (culture, setting, tradition) using the illustrated Key Terms box before reading, and point to the images as you define each one.
- Discussion questions: What is different about the setting in Yeh-Shen and Cendrillon? What special tradition or object shows up in more than one version?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Read each story aloud with the student, pausing at the pictures, and have them point to or repeat the key words before filling in a sentence frame such as "In ___, the story is set in ___."
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare two versions across the six cultures, noting one similarity and one difference using "Both stories have ___, but ___."
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes for vocabulary, 15-20 minutes for reading and picture discussion, and 10-15 minutes for sentence-frame practice.
