Freud's Defense Mechanisms Viewing Guide and Vocabulary
A viewing guide with short-answer questions (1-3 words each) and a vocabulary table for two video transcripts introducing Freud's id, ego, superego, and defense mechanisms. Designed for 10th graders in an introductory developmental psychology course, it builds comprehension of the structural model, unconscious processes, and the classification of defense mechanisms, and includes a psychological-application column for each term.
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use the viewing guide during a single class period by pausing the first transcript after the id/ego/superego section and again after the pathological and immature defense mechanism sections, so students can answer and compare responses before continuing.
- Discussion question: Why do you think Freud argued that defense mechanisms work unconsciously rather than by deliberate choice?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the vocabulary table terms (id, ego, superego, unconscious, anxiety, denial, projection) before viewing, and have students match each term to its example in the transcript.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare projection with projective identification and to identify which mature defense mechanism (humor, sublimation, suppression, altruism) best reflects a healthy response to stress.
- Estimated time: about 45 to 60 minutes for both transcripts, the viewing guide, and a brief whole-class debrief.
