Heart Rate Stations: Pulse Counting and Resting Baselines
By Diane C.
A collaborative station-rotation packet for 11th grade and up that uses pulse counting to explore homeostasis and the autonomic nervous system. Students measure resting and exercise heart rates, record data on a worksheet, and build vocabulary around palpation and heart rate regulation.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a full class period (about 45 to 55 minutes) with small groups rotating through each station, with each group keeping its own data sheet.
- Discussion question: Why might a student's resting heart rate be lower after a month of regular aerobic exercise, and which part of the autonomic nervous system is responsible for that change?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the key terms (homeostasis, autonomic nervous system, palpation) and have students practice locating a radial or carotid pulse before starting the timed counts.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to calculate their heart rate variability across trials and compare the results to the stated 60 to 100 bpm resting range, explaining any outliers.
- Estimated time: Roughly 5 minutes per station including setup, plus 10 minutes at the end for group debrief and sharing findings.
