Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a culminating review after students have studied West Virginia geography, ideally in a 45-60 minute block with teams of three to four.
- Discussion question: Why do you think some county seats are located far from the geographic center of their counties, and what does that suggest about how the state developed?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a county-to-seat reference list or map for the first challenge, and read the cipher instructions aloud with the group before they begin.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to research the founding year of one county seat and explain how its history connects to the region's transportation or industry.
- Plan roughly 10 minutes of setup, 35-40 minutes of play, and 10 minutes of debrief to discuss which clues were hardest and why.
