Short Vowel Sound Sort for First Grade
A short, hands-on CVC word sorting activity in which 1st graders tap out each sound, blend words like cat and bed, and sort them into short a, e, i, o, and u columns. It builds phonemic awareness, decoding, and early vowel recognition, and includes a tree map for brainstorming extra examples.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a small-group or literacy-center activity during phonics instruction, after students have practiced identifying short vowel sounds orally; it should fit comfortably in a 15 to 20 minute block.
- Discussion question: What sound do you hear in the middle of 'pig' and how is it different from the middle sound in 'bed'?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Model the tap-and-blend routine with one word aloud, then have students tap along with you on the next two words before working independently; offer a picture cue or the word bank read aloud.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to add three more CVC words to each column on the tree map and explain how they chose the vowel sound for each.
- Estimated time: About 15 to 20 minutes for the sort, plus a few extra minutes if you use the tree map brainstorm as a whole-class warm-up.
