“I need a sentence for the following trick words: the, a, and, is, his, of, as has, to, into”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this station as one of several rotating centers during a 15-20 minute literacy block, pairing students so they can take turns saying words aloud.
- Discussion question: Why do you think words like "the" and "a" don't always sound the way they look? Can you think of another trick word you see often in books?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a word wall or card set with the trick words, and let students point to each word as they say it before attempting the book search.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write an original sentence for each word and read it back to a partner, or to count how many times each trick word appears on one page.
- Plan roughly 5 minutes per task, including the partner rotation and the Trick Word Sentences recording sheet at the end.
