Gallery Walk: Ancient Legacies for Sixth Grade
A multi-station gallery walk packet for 6th graders that explores how ancient civilizations, starting with the Olmec, continue to shape our world today. Students analyze eight sources with a graphic organizer and build a poster presentation on the legacy of laws, public works, innovations, and trade systems, sharpening historical analysis, source evaluation, and visual communication.
“Students bring the focus to legacy and connection, showing how ancient laws, public works, innovations, and trade systems continue to influence us today. They complete a graphic organizer by analyzing 8 sources and create a poster presentation needed through a Gallery Walk Presentation.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a multi-day station rotation, with students visiting each of the eight sources and recording findings on the graphic organizer before building their posters; plan roughly 45 minutes per station or two class periods for the full walk.
- Discussion question: Which Olmec innovation, such as their drainage systems or large-scale stone transport, do you think had the greatest influence on later civilizations, and why?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach key terms like "legacy," "trade system," and "public works," and provide a partially completed graphic organizer with one example filled in per source.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare two sources' claims about a single legacy and note where the evidence agrees or conflicts, then add a short evaluation of each source's reliability to their poster.
- Time estimate: About 2 class periods for station work and research, plus 1 period for poster creation and the final gallery presentation.
