Creating the US Constitution: Station Review Activity
By Stephanie M.
A multi-station review packet for 8th graders covering the drafting of the US Constitution, from the failures of the Articles of Confederation through the Great Compromise. Students build vocabulary such as representation, proportional, bicameral, and compromise while practicing close reading and short written responses at each station.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as an interactive review in a 45- to 60-minute block, with students rotating in small groups of 3 or 4 through the stations and recording answers on their own sheets.
- Discussion question: Why were large and small states so divided over representation, and how did the Great Compromise address both sides' concerns?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the Words to Know list, and have them read each station aloud with a partner before answering the questions.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to argue whether the compromise favored one group of states over another, citing evidence from the passage.
- Estimated time: About 10 minutes per station, plus 10 minutes for a whole-class debrief at the end.
