In-Context Vocabulary Predictions for First Graders
A short practice set in which 1st graders use sentence clues to predict the meaning of unfamiliar words like ambition, assure, and belittle, then explain their reasoning in writing. It builds vocabulary, context-clue strategies, and short written justification, with a worked example (absolute) and sentence-frame prompts ("I think this word means ___ because ___") to support students as they work.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a whole-group mini-lesson by modeling the "Absolute" example aloud, thinking through each clue, before letting students complete the remaining items independently or in pairs, roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
- Discussion question: What clue in the sentence helped you guess the meaning, and how do you know your guess makes sense?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Read each sentence aloud, point out one clue word at a time, and offer a choice of two possible meanings before asking them to write their own guess.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to use each target word in an original sentence of their own, and to explain whether a different clue could have led to a different prediction.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes for the full set, plus a few minutes for sharing answers at the end.
