Station Rotation: Theme and Summary in The War of the Wall
A three-tier station rotation for 7th graders built around Toni Cade Bambara's short story "The War of the Wall" (1980), targeting Missouri Learning Standard 7.RI.2.D on determining theme and writing objective summaries. Each station includes a learning target, success criteria, progress monitoring, an exit ticket, and an answer key, moving students from literal meaning (Tier I) through deeper analysis (Tier II) to independent theme work (Tier III).
“Create three intervention lessons with three tiers and label three stations Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, to include Missouri Learning Standard 7.RI.2.D, Learning Target, Success Criteria, Exit Ticket, Progress Monitoring Say, Mean, Matter, Answer Key using the story The War of the Wall by Toni Cade Bambara in1980”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use the stations across 2-3 class periods of about 45 minutes each, with students rotating in small groups so each group works at Tier I, II, and III in turn, or assign tiers by readiness for targeted intervention.
- Tier I discussion question: What does the painter lady's challenge reveal about how Lou and the narrator see their wall? Have students cite a quote before answering.
- Tier II scaffold for struggling readers: provide a sentence frame such as "In the story, ___ shows that ___ because ___," and pair them with a peer for the first quote-finding task.
- Tier III extension for advanced students: ask them to articulate a theme in one sentence, then write an objective summary that leaves out their own opinion and tests whether the theme still holds.
- Plan roughly 10-15 minutes per station rotation, and use the exit tickets and progress monitoring prompts at the end to decide which students need reteaching.
