Categories and Labels: Station Rotation for 2nd Grade
A short station-rotation packet that introduces 2nd graders to categories and labels through picture-based examples like fruit, with key vocabulary, a guided explanation, and partner discussion prompts. It builds classification and vocabulary skills and works well as one station in a small-group rotation.
“What is a category and what is a label?”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as the opening station in a small-group rotation, roughly 10 to 15 minutes, before students move on to hands-on sorting activities.
- Discussion question: Why do the apple, banana, and orange belong in the same category, and what would the label for that group be?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Read the Key Words table aloud together and act out each term by gathering a few real objects into a group and naming it.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to propose a new category with three items and a label, then explain why the items are similar.
- Estimated time: about 10 to 15 minutes including the partner talk.
