Context Clue Detectives: 5th Grade Vocabulary Stations
A small-group station activity for 5th graders in which students read short literary snippets, identify bolded academic words, and decide which type of context clue (definition, synonym, antonym, or example) reveals each meaning. It builds vocabulary strategies and discussion skills, and students record their reasoning on a Vocabulary Station Record.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as one station in a rotation during a 30 to 45 minute vocabulary block, with groups of three or four students working together before recording findings individually.
- Discussion questions: Which words in the snippet helped you figure out what 'advocate' means? Why might a synonym clue be more helpful than an antonym clue in this passage?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a printed anchor chart of the four clue types and model one snippet aloud, thinking through each clue type before asking students to try the next one.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write an original snippet that uses a bold academic word with a different type of context clue than the one their group identified.
- Plan roughly 10 minutes per snippet, including time for group talk and recording on the station sheet.
