Long E and Long I Spelling Practice for 3rd Grade
By Katie B.
A spelling practice worksheet for 3rd graders that sorts Wonders Unit 2 words by long e and long i spelling patterns, including e, ee, ea, ie, ey, y, i_e, and igh. It builds sound-spelling recognition through a word bank, a pattern chart, and sorting directions, and works well as a short independent or small-group practice set.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 15-20 minute spelling practice station or homework review after introducing the long e and long i patterns in Unit 2, Weeks 1 and 2.
- Discussion question: Why do you think the long e sound can be spelled so many different ways, and how can you tell which spelling to use in a word like "teeth" versus "each"?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have students say each word aloud, tap out the vowel sound, and circle the vowel team before writing it in the correct row; provide a pre-filled example for the first word in each category.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to find or write additional words for each pattern, or to identify which words on the list contain both a long e or long i sound and an unstressed syllable, such as "tiny" or "pilot."
- Estimated time: about 15-20 minutes for completion, plus 5 minutes for a quick class check of answers.
