Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables in Science
A practice set of short science scenarios in which 6th graders identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and constants in simple investigations like plant growth. It builds experimental design vocabulary and reasoning about fair tests, with fill-in-the-blank tables that guide students through each scenario.
“Independent, dependent variables in scientific investigations”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 20-30 minute independent or partner practice block right after introducing variables with a short model experiment.
- Discussion question: Why must the plants be kept in the same sunny window and use the same soil, and what would happen to the results if they weren't?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them underline the sentence that says what is being changed on purpose before filling in the independent variable row.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to rewrite one scenario with a flaw (such as changing two things at once) and explain how it would weaken the conclusion.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes for the full set, plus a few minutes for a quick class check of answers.
