Photosynthesis: A Three-Day Homework Series for Grade 7 Special Education
By Elaine K.
A three-day homework packet that introduces photosynthesis through short readings, key-term definitions, and guided questions, designed for 7th graders in special education. Students build science vocabulary, cause-and-effect reasoning, and the ability to explain inputs and outputs in their own words, with the reading kept accessible at a 4th-grade level.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Assign one day per evening, or pair each day's reading with a short in-class warm-up so students can ask questions before going home.
- Discussion question: Why do you think the plant needs sunlight, and what would happen if it didn't get any?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-read the Key Terms box aloud, and have students highlight the three inputs (water, carbon dioxide, sunlight) before answering questions.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis to those of cellular respiration in a short paragraph.
- Estimated time: About 20 to 25 minutes per day, including reading and questions.
