Photosynthesis Guided Notes with Diagrams for Grade 4
By Claudio V.
A guided-notes handout that walks 4th graders through photosynthesis, including the light-dependent and light-independent reactions, with diagrams and fill-in prompts. It builds science vocabulary, reading comprehension, and the ability to summarize a multi-step process in their own words.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 45-minute science lesson, having students read each section aloud or silently, then fill in blanks as you model the process on the board.
- Discussion question: Why do you think plants need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide all at the same time? Where does the oxygen come from?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the key terms (photosynthesis, glucose, chlorophyll) with a picture card for each, and provide a word bank for the blanks.
- Extension for advanced students: have them sketch a flowchart connecting the light-dependent reactions to the light-independent reactions and explain how one provides inputs for the other.
- Estimated time: about 20 to 25 minutes to complete the notes, plus 10 minutes for a quick class check-in.
