Science3-5
Ecosystem Roles: Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers
By Karla G.
A practice set for 5th graders that introduces the roles living things play in a food chain, from producers and consumers to decomposers. Students match role terms to definitions and work through reading-based questions that build science vocabulary and close-reading skills. It works well as a 30-minute independent or partner practice block after a lesson on food chains.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or follow-up to a food chain lesson, reading the opening forest passage aloud so students hear how grasshoppers, hawks, and decomposing logs connect.
- Discussion question: If all the decomposers in a forest disappeared, what would happen to the soil and to the plants that depend on it?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the words producer, consumer, and decomposer with a simple picture or gesture, and let them work the matching in pairs before writing answers alone.
- Extension for advanced students: have them trace a complete food chain from a producer to a top consumer and explain where energy is lost along the way.
- Estimated time: about 30 minutes, including the matching activity and a short written check.
