Tense Timeline Race: Past, Present, Future Game
A hands-on partner game for 3rd graders in which students sort 15 sentence cards into Past, Present, and Future piles within a 5-minute timer. It builds recognition of regular and irregular verbs and simple verb tenses, with a cheat sheet of tense clues and a bonus round for identifying action words.
“create hands on center activities and games for this indicator: use frequently occurring nouns, verbs (regular and irregular), and simple verb tenses”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the three tense categories with the cheat sheet before play, modeling one sentence from each pile aloud so students hear how -ed endings, words like yesterday, and will signal time.
- Discussion question: "How did you know this sentence happened before? What word told you?" Also ask, "Which verbs changed their spelling, like ran or went, and how do those change the timeline?"
- Scaffold for struggling readers by pairing them with a stronger partner, giving a smaller set of 6 to 8 cards, and reading each card aloud together before sorting.
- Extension for advanced students: have them write one new sentence per tense using an irregular verb, then trade with a partner to sort.
- Plan about 5 minutes of play time plus 10 minutes for the introduction and scoring discussion, fitting a 20-minute center rotation.
