Character Diary and Book Review for Grade 3
A short reading-response packet for 3rd graders that pairs a first-person character diary entry with a book review and recommendation. It builds perspective-taking, narrative voice, and opinion writing, and it includes guided prompts (diary date, mood, and reflection questions) that scaffold students through each step.
“Advanced reader book report for 3 rd grade”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as an extension after students finish a chapter book, in a 45-minute independent reading or writing block, or as a choice activity for an advanced reader book report.
- Discussion question: If your character could write one diary entry about the hardest day in the story, what would they worry about, and how do you know?
- Scaffold for students who are still building confidence: provide a sentence starter such as "Today I felt ___ because ___," and let them dictate or draft their entry before writing it out.
- Extension for advanced readers: ask them to compare two characters' diary entries about the same event, noticing how each one's feelings and point of view shape the story.
- Estimated time: about 20 to 30 minutes per entry, plus 15 to 20 minutes for the book review and recommendation.
