Greek Roots Sorting Chart for 3rd Grade
A dry-erase sorting chart in which 3rd graders sort word cards into three columns for the Greek roots -bio (life), -tele (far/distant), and -photo (light), with icons to help them remember each meaning. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes and works well for small groups or whole-class word-study practice.
“Please Make a sorting chart used with dry erase markers. there should be 3 columns. -bio, -tele, -photo please include an icon that best represents each Greek Root”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce each root with its meaning and icon before students sort, and model one example word per column (such as biology, telescope, photograph).
- Discussion question: Which icon helped you remember the meaning of -tele, and why?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a word bank with pictures of each word and have students read each card aloud before placing it.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to find or write two additional English words for each root and use a dry-erase marker to add them to the chart.
- Estimated time: about 15 to 20 minutes, including a short whole-class review of the sorted words.
