Spooky Halloween Spelling Word Hunt for Second Grade
A one-page Halloween reading and drawing activity for 2nd graders practicing digraphs (ck, tch, ch), magic e words, and two-syllable words. Students read and clap out 12 spooky words, check them off, then draw a Halloween scene and label each word they use.
“create an activity halloween themed with words or sentences students can read and then draw a scene based on the words and sentences. Students are learning spelling patterns, digraph ck, tch, ch, magic e words, and syllable rules such as the rabbit and reptile rule for multisyllabic words”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a literacy center or a 30-minute spelling block after you have introduced digraphs, magic e, and the rabbit and reptile syllable rules.
- Discussion question: Which words have two beats, and how did you know where to split them? Ask students to explain how the magic e changes the vowel sound in words like bone and stone.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-read the word list together, clap syllables with them, and let them point to letter patterns before they draw. Partner them with a strong reader for the labeling step.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write one spooky sentence using at least three of the words, or to sort the words by pattern and explain their grouping.
- Estimated time: about 20 to 30 minutes, including reading, clapping, checking boxes, and drawing and labeling the scene.
