Internal and External Conflict Task Cards for Grade 6
A set of task cards with a short reference guide that helps 6th graders tell internal conflict (character vs. self) from external conflict (character vs. character) using scenarios they can sort and discuss. It builds reading comprehension, story-element analysis, and short written justifications, and it works well for a 30 to 45 minute station or small-group block.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the Conflict Type Reference first as a whole-class mini-lesson so students have the vocabulary before they touch the cards.
- Discussion question: In the wallet scenario, what is the internal struggle, and what external conflict could arise if someone else found out Maya kept the money?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: provide a two-column anchor chart ("inside the character's mind" vs. "between characters") and let them sort two or three cards together before working independently.
- Extension for advanced students: have them write a scenario that combines both conflict types and explain how the internal struggle drives the external one.
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes for the reference review and 25 to 35 minutes for card work and discussion.
