Beginning Sounds B, M, S, and T for Kindergarten
A three-page practice set for kindergarten readers, where students say each picture aloud and circle the ones that start with the target letter's sound, such as /b/ in Bear or /m/ in Moon. It builds phonemic awareness and letter-sound recognition, with a ten-frame counting bonus that extends the work into early math. It works well as a short independent or small-group station during literacy centers.
“make a 3 page packet for kindergarten focusing on beginning sounds and circling pictures that have the same beginning sound”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 10 to 15 minute independent or small-group station during a phonics block, after students have been introduced to the target letters.
- Discussion question: "What sound does your picture name start with, and can you find another picture that starts with the same sound?"
- Scaffold for struggling readers: model the first picture together by exaggerating the beginning sound ("bbbbear"), then have the student repeat each picture name with you before circling.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to name a new word for each target sound that is not on the page, then complete the ten-frame bonus by drawing the matching number of dots.
- Estimated time: about 15 minutes for the two letter sections, plus 5 more minutes for the counting challenge.
