Primer and First Grade Sight Word Practice
A two-part reading packet for 1st graders, with a 10-word list each of Primer and First Grade sight words followed by sentences that use them. It builds fluent recognition of high-frequency words and gives students quick, repeated practice reading connected text.
“Could you please create me a list of 10-Primer and 10-1st grade sight words, and I also need 5 sentences with Primer and 1st grade words.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a short daily warm-up or a 10-15 minute small-group station, having students read each word list aloud while pointing to each word, then move to the sentences.
- Discussion question: Which of these words do you already know by sight, and which ones do you need to sound out? Ask students to point out a sight word in a sentence and explain how they recognized it.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Start with only the Primer list and one or two sentences, and have the student read each sentence twice with you modeling first, then reading it independently.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own sentence using two or more words from the First Grade list, or to identify which sentence words are decodable and which are sight words.
- Estimated time: About 15 minutes per session, with the full packet completed over two or three sessions.
