Vocabulary Matching and Application for Eighth Grade
A two-day vocabulary set for 8th graders that uses matching to introduce five words (apathy, confound, delve, exasperation, terse) and then sentence completion to apply them in context. It builds word-meaning recall and the ability to use precise vocabulary in writing, and it works well as a short bell ringer.
“Bell ringer for vocab. Have students match definition and word. Students should fill in a sentence with the words apathy - a feeling of having no interest in or enthusiasm about anything confound - to mix up or confuse delve - to search thoroughly and carefully for information exasperation - a strong degree of annoyance or irritation terse - a very short statement or remark”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use Day One as a 5-10 minute bell ringer where students draw lines between the shuffled terms and definitions before you review the pairings aloud.
- Discussion question: Which of these words could describe a character in a story you've read recently, and what clues in the text helped you decide?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide the word bank with a short example sentence for each term, and let them work in pairs during the matching step.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write one original sentence using two of the words together, or to explain how 'terse' and 'exasperation' might appear in a single conversation.
- Estimated time: About 10 minutes for matching on Day One and about 15 minutes for the sentence completions on Day Two.
