Balanced and Unbalanced Forces for 5th Grade
A short science reading packet that introduces force, net force, and acceleration through everyday examples like kicking a ball and tug-of-war. It builds vocabulary and reasoning about how balanced and unbalanced forces change motion, and is well suited to a single reading-and-discussion block in 5th grade.
“force and motion”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or review before a hands-on force activity, such as a tug-of-war or a cart pushed with different weights, in a 30 to 45 minute block.
- Discussion question: If two people pull on a rope with equal strength in opposite directions, what happens to the rope, and how would that change if one person pulled harder?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the key terms (force, net force, acceleration) with a visual card, and have students act out a push and a pull before reading.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to predict and explain the motion of an object with three forces acting on it, calculating the net force in a diagram.
- Estimated time: about 20 minutes for reading and vocabulary, plus 10 to 15 minutes of discussion.
