The Five Themes of Geography Practice Set
A matching-and-map practice packet for 1st graders that introduces the five themes of geography through picture matching, a labeled Earth map, and a tree map for sorting examples from their own world. It builds vocabulary, picture-to-meaning connections, and early geographic thinking, and works well as a short guided lesson or independent center activity.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the five themes with a brief whole-class talk before students start, then have them draw lines to match each theme to its meaning and picture as a short warm-up or social studies block.
- Discussion question: "What do you see on the map, and where do you think it is?" Follow up with "Can you find something in our classroom that shows a place or a location?"
- For struggling readers, read each theme name and meaning aloud, point to the matching picture together, and have them complete one or two matches with you before working solo.
- For advanced students, have them add a second example to the tree map for each theme and explain how two themes can describe the same place.
- Plan roughly 20-30 minutes for the matching section and the map discussion, plus 10 minutes for the tree map.
