Cut and Paste World Map Labels for Second Grade
By Gabriella E.
A cut-and-paste world map activity where 2nd graders find and label seven continents and five oceans, then complete a map-directions section. It builds geography vocabulary and map-reading skills, with check-off prompts and a challenge that asks students to place repeated labels in two spots.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a whole-class or small-group geography lesson, about 30 to 40 minutes, with a short map walkthrough before students start cutting and pasting.
- Discussion question: Which continent is the largest, and how can you tell from the map? Which oceans touch more than one continent?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-read the continent and ocean names aloud, and point to each one on a large classroom globe or wall map before pairing labels with the printed map.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them find the two oceans that appear twice in the word bank and explain where each spot belongs using a compass direction word.
- Estimated time: 30 to 40 minutes, plus a few extra minutes for the map-directions section.
