Lenni Lenape and the Middle Colonies Guided Notes
A guided notes packet for 7th graders, roughly four short sections, that walks through the Lenni Lenape, Dutch and English settlement, Pennsylvania under William Penn, and the economy and diversity of the middle colonies. Students fill in blanks as they read, building reading comprehension, main-idea tracking, and historical cause-and-effect understanding, with a three-question check for understanding at the end.
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 45-minute reading-and-notes lesson, with students reading each topic and completing the blanks before a brief whole-class check.
- Discussion question: Why did the Dutch, English, and Quakers each value religious tolerance differently, and how did it shape who settled the middle colonies?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach terms like sachem, patroon, and Quaker, and have students read one topic at a time with a partner before filling in blanks.
- Extension for advanced students: have them compare how William Penn's treaty with Tamanend differed from Thomas Penn's 1737 land claim, and what that suggests about colonial relations with Native nations.
- Estimated time: about 45 minutes for reading and notes, plus 5-10 minutes for the check for understanding.
