Academic Vocabulary Practice for High School ELL Students
A vocabulary packet for 9th grade English language learners that introduces nine target words, including the noun and verb forms of "debate," through a definition table with academic example sentences. It builds word-part-of-speech awareness and sentence-level comprehension, and it works well as a short independent or small-group warm-up.
“Can you please help me create a vocabualry activity for intermediate high school ELL students that include the following words: auditory, cognitive, focus, enhance, debate as a noun, debate as a verb, accurately, accuracy, process”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 20-30 minute warm-up or pre-reading activity before a unit text, having students read the table aloud in pairs first.
- Discussion question: How does the meaning of "debate" change when it is a noun versus a verb, and can you write one sentence for each?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a bilingual glossary or picture cues for each word, and let students copy the example sentences before attempting their own.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to use at least three target words, including accurately and accuracy, in a short paragraph about a topic they are studying.
- Estimated time: About 30 minutes for the table review, plus 10 minutes for the discussion question and follow-up practice.
