Weather Stations: Modal Verbs in English and Spanish
By John G.
A bilingual station rotation packet for 9th-grade newcomer and ELL students that teaches the modal verbs must, should, and maybe through weather-themed scenarios like sunny and hot days. Students build vocabulary, reading comprehension, and simple speaking and writing skills, with English and Spanish side by side and visual supports throughout.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a rotation during a 45 to 60 minute block, with small groups moving through each weather station and spending about 10 minutes per station.
- Discussion question: Why do you think we say "must" for safety but "should" for good ideas? Can you give an example from your own life?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the three modal words with the picture cues and bilingual glossary before students read, and have them underline each modal in the passage.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write two new sentences for a different weather station, such as a rainy or snowy day, using must, should, and maybe correctly.
- Estimated time: Allow about 10 minutes per station, plus 5 to 10 minutes for a whole-class wrap-up where groups share one sentence each.
