Parts of Speech Word Sort for Sixth Grade
A short one-page word sort in which 6th graders read a brief reminder of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, then sort a bank of fifteen everyday words into three columns. It builds quick part-of-speech identification and word-category reasoning, and it works well as a warm-up or a 15-20 minute independent practice task.
“create a worksheet that practices identify nouns, verbs and adjectives”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a warm-up or exit ticket after a mini-lesson on parts of speech, or as a quick independent practice in a 15-20 minute block.
- Discussion question: Some words, like "laugh" or "study," can be a noun or a verb. How could a student tell which one is being used in a sentence?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them say each word aloud with a simple test sentence ("I can ___" for verbs, "the ___" for nouns, "very ___" for adjectives) before writing it in a column.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write one sentence using a word that fits two categories, then label each part of speech in the sentence.
- Estimated time: About 15-20 minutes, plus a few minutes for a whole-class answer check.
