Gallery Walk: Greasers and Socs in The Outsiders
A gallery-walk station packet for 8th graders that pairs 1960s images with clue cards and informational captions about the Greaser and Soc subcultures from S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Students match each clue to its picture while completing a note catcher, building close-reading, historical context, and evidence-based inference skills.
“create resources for an activity where students get clues that point to something in the 1960s related to the outsiders and then they need to match it to the picture. I want the pictures to have additional information underneath them. This will be done like a gallery walk with a note catcher”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a rotating gallery walk during a 45-minute block, with small groups moving through stations in about 5 minutes each and recording observations on the note catcher.
- Discussion question: Why did Ponyboy see his long hair as a symbol of identity, and what does that suggest about the pressures the Greasers faced?
- Scaffold for struggling readers by pre-reading the caption under each image aloud and asking them to underline one clue word before matching the picture.
- Extension for advanced students: have them compare the Greaser and Soc styles and argue which group the 1960s culture of the novel valued more, citing the text.
- Plan roughly 10 minutes for a whole-class debrief after the walk to connect the stations back to the novel's themes of class and belonging.
