Sight Words and Short A Tracing Practice
A short tracing and writing worksheet for early readers that practices five sight words (a, and, can, go, I) and a set of short a CVC words such as bag, cap, man, and cat. Students trace each word and then write it independently on a line, building letter formation, word recognition, and early spelling confidence. It works well as a 10 to 15 minute independent or small-group warm-up during a phonics block.
“create a worksheet with the following words: a, and, can, go, I, bag, cap, man, van, map, pan, cab, rat, cat, jam, map, mad”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or independent station during a phonics or word-work block, ideally after you have modeled the short a sound and the five sight words on the board.
- Discussion question: What do you notice about bag, cap, and cat? What letter stays the same in each word, and what sound does it make?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have students say each word aloud as they trace it, and sound out the letters before writing. You may also provide a word bank at the top of the page for copying.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to think of two or three other short a words that rhyme with the words on the page, then write them on a blank line.
- Estimated time: About 10 to 15 minutes for most students to complete the full page.
